FRAMEwork Zine
FRAMEwork cover art, Alison Stratten.
FRAMEwork examines the role of art as engaged by social movements. Informed by conceptualizations of collective action frames (Benford & Snow, 2000), those of art in relation to protest (Reed, 2019) and rooted to the Civil Rights Movement as a site of critical influence (Raiford, 2007), this zine considers the role of art as engaged by ACT UP/AIDS, Northern Ireland Civil Rights and Climate Justice Movements.
FRAMEwork is something made to highlight past and ongoing resistance, capacities and hope. The writing considers themes of visuality and the assertion of identity, youth as architects of freedom and disobedience. The intended viewer is an educator or emerging artist/activist, and the content seeks to highlight mutualities across difference. This aim comes from a place of radical hope, in the name of supporting and inspiring ongoing resistance to hierarchical forms of oppression.
